Anchor of Prosperity…
Kitchen is one of the most important areas in the house based on Feng Shui and Vastu Shastra.
First of all, the arrangement of spaces in the kitchen should be done in such a way that it is easy to use the 3 most important items – the stove, the sink and the fridge. In professional term, this is called the Kitchen Work Triangle. According to the Work Triangle principle, the most effective kitchen layouts revolve around a trio of fictitious straight lines that form a triangle between the stove, the refrigerator, and the sink and the purpose is to make sure you can use your kitchen appliances with ease.
How you arrange your kitchen is up to you and how you use the space, but here are some considerations to make while building your kitchen work triangle for the greatest outcomes:
- The triangle’s sides should not exceed 9 feet in length or be any less than 4 feet.
- For cleaning up and filling the dishwasher, leave at least 18 inches of counter space on either side of the sink.
- To unpack groceries, leave at least 15 inches of counter space close to the refrigerator.
- To prepare food, leave 3 feet of counter space available next to the range or cooktop.
- The area should be doubled to 6 feet if there will be two cooks working at once.
- Avoid any major traffic routes that pass across the work triangle.
Another important factor in arranging the kitchen deals with the concept of the 5 elements and the proper flow of chi. Since having proper food is directly connected to life and well-being, kitchen is associated with prosperity, especially the stove. Therefore, it should be kept clean and placed away from sharp edges, producing Shar chi.
Furthermore, considering the 5 elements, Stove is connected with the Fire Element, therefore it should be kept away from the Water element, which is connected to the sink. Therefore, while designing the work triangle, we should not keep the sink and the stove too close to one another.
How the components are arranged is the secret to achieving harmony in the kitchen. The elements connected to the components of a kitchen could be described as follows:
- Sink: Water Element
- Stove: Fire Element
- Wooden Furniture, Butcher-Block Countertops, or Cabinets: Wood Element
- Bar Stools, Hardware, or Metal Appliances: Metal Element
- Marble or Granite Countertops & Stone Flooring: Earth Element
In general, the kitchen work space and counters should be welcoming, clean and designed to accommodate dining and gathering. Nowadays a lot of activities take place in the kitchen from cooking to having breakfast with family or dinner and drink with friends. Therefore, it is one of the most important elements of a house interior design.
