How to Handle Unexpected Events

Life is uncertain. No matter how much we mentally prepare, certain events like death and medical expenses come with their own load of unexpectedness.

Emergencies and challenges come in all shapes, sizes and forms, from minor to big. While not all unexpected events are adverse, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the negative ones. Even the most careful planners are sometimes surprised by such sudden events and emergencies, reminding us that we cannot control everything!

Here are 5 things to consider, even when you feel bogged down by life’s emergencies and surprises.

  1. Life is Full of Unexpected Events – Accept it

A simple, monotonous life would be extremely boring; especially when the purpose of life is to grow, evolve and experience new things.

In fact, it is the boredom and monotony of everyday existence that causes our minds to become idle and subconsciously try to create challenges to fix the status quo. This could be something as commonplace as changing jobs, to something far more daring such as investing into a new business.

We need to accept that Life is Life! And it comes with big and small surprises, good and not-so-good events and happenings. Life is governed by change. Sometimes we are up, and sometimes, we are down. We can’t control it, but we can control how to deal with it!

The rules of life, Karma and nature are exact, clear and work the same for all. We need to learn how to work with them and not against them.

“Things do not happen without a cause, but sometimes we just do not know the cause. Both pleasant and unpleasant experiences are necessary for our growth. All are ultimately good!” Master Choa Kok Sui

We may not know the cause, but we work with the faith that there is a cause, and we can eventually work through it and overcome it.

  1. Try to Shake the Idea of Perfectionism

Nothing in life is perfect and is ever evolving. None of us are perfect, and we need to realize that others are also growing and, therefore, we all make mistakes. Evolution requires time, process and lots of mistakes. Everyone grows at their own pace!

Sometimes we have unrealistic expectations of ourselves and others.

The key is not to get stuck, not to make a fuss, not to meditate on the mistakes, but to keep pushing, keep trying and keep evolving…

We also must understand evolving too rapidly accelerates the working out of past negative karmas. So, if that is the path we are choosing, we need to be prepared. And we also need to create a safety measure using the science of service and tithing.

  1. Focus on the Bigger Picture 

If you really think about it, you may realize that the most difficult challenges that happened to you in the past were actually blessing in disguise. Sometimes they helped you change your path, find a better partner, create a more fruitful and rewarding life or simply think deeper about your life purpose.

So when we really meditate on our life, we see a higher purpose for all that has happened, is happening and yet to come. Steve Jobs calls it “Connecting the Dots.” We can only connect the dots when we look back, and not forward. But since we have seen this higher intelligence and purpose time and time before, we can build trust that whatever happens to me is for my own good!

Trust the universe! Trust your higher soul and trust the teacher!

  1. Don’t Play the Blame Game

It’s easy to want to blame others, the government, some unforeseen powers, or simply bad luck. But blaming others for our mistakes not only doesn’t help to improve the situation, but also may end up creating relationship problems! No one likes to be with someone who always plays the blame game.

Instead of focusing on the problem, let’s turn our attention on the solutions. First, learn to breathe and release all the pent-up emotions so that you can think more clearly. Then think about the possible solutions and people who can help you deal with the unexpected challenge.

  1. Act, Don’t React

When an unexpected issue happens, it is natural to react, to panic or to get angry. That is a primary reaction of our Solar Plexus chakra.

Chakras have Consciousness. They react to situations in different ways. The key is to be able to control them and instead of reacting, to respond to situations.

Having these different chakras with various voices sometimes feels like a battlefield. The stronger chakra usually wins. For example, if you receive a nasty message from a friend, your Solar Plexus wants to retaliate. The Heart asks you to forgive, while the Ajna may suggest to respond when you are calmer.

If we don’t have enough control, we may just follow the Solar Plexus, send a nastier message and ruin a friendship. It’s common to want to blame the Solar Plexus, but it is responsible for your self-interest.

In another example, the Solar Plexus may be needed to help you get back what rightly belongs to you from someone intrusive.

Essentially, the soul should always be in control to study the situation and decide what is best to be done in each situation. For that, we need character-building and spiritual practice.
